WASHINGTON D.C. -- Today, Congressman Steven Horsford voted to pass H.R. 2547, the Comprehensive Debt Collection Improvement Act. The Comprehensive Debt Collection Act improves important protections for small businesses, servicemembers, students, and other consumers against harassment by certain debt collectors.

"Throughout the pandemic, Nevadan families and small businesses have shown resilience and strength trying to keep up with their bills, all while debt collectors have received record profits. This has disproportionately impacted low-income communities and communities of color in Nevada's Fourth District," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "The Comprehensive Debt Collection Improvement Act will protect small and minority-owned businesses, students with loans, consumers with medical debts, and servicemembers by reinforcing their rights and holding debt collectors accountable. I'm proud to have voted for this legislation to protect all Nevadans from mistreatment from predatory debt collectors."

The Comprehensive Debt Collection Improvement Act is supported by a number of consumer and civil rights groups, including the Americans for Financial Reform, Center for Economic Integrity, Center for Responsible Lending, Color of Change, Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice, Consumer Action, Consumer Federation of America, Demos, Equal Justice Under Law, HPPCARES, Legal Aid Justice Center, National Association of Consumer Advocates, National Center for Access to Justice, National Center for Law and Economic Justice, National Consumer Law Center (on behalf of its low-income clients), Pennsylvania Council of Churches, Public Citizen, Public Justice, Public Justice Center, Student Borrower Protection Center, and U.S. PIRG.
