Barton Joins President Bush for Signing of Deficit Reduction Act

02/08/06

WASHINGTON - After working tirelessly on critical reforms to telecommunications and Medicaid, U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, saw his work take effect today as President George W. Bush signed the Deficit Reduction Act into law. Barton joined the President and other relevant lawmakers for the signing ceremony, which took place in the East Room of the White House.

The Deficit Reduction Act passed the House on Wednesday, February 1, and reduces the federal budget deficit by more than $39 billion. The bill makes important changes to Medicaid that will help ensure the program remains viable for the future. It also sets February 17, 2009 as the deadline for the end of analog broadcasting, freeing much-needed spectrum for public safety communications.

"It is an honor to stand by the President today and witness the signing of this important legislation," Barton said. "Congress has an obligation to ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently, and I look forward to seeing these reforms that are so critical to responsible spending take effect."
