Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr., Chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials for the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, released the following statement regarding the mass shooting at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority yesterday. The gunman, Samuel Cassidy, was an employee at the railyard and killed nine co-workers and himself in the early morning incident.

"I want to send my prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the senseless tragedy at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority yesterday morning. I am devastated, but unfortunately not shocked, that we have experienced another mass shooting in our country. Once again, the proliferation of guns in America has led to the deaths of innocent people. We should be ashamed at how easily guns can get into the hands of people who will use them against their fellow man. Gun violence is a national pandemic in this country. We need to take action immediately, such as passing stronger background check laws, to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and save American lives."
