Pingree Votes for Bipartisan Legislation to Investigate Jan. 6th Domestic Terrorist Attack

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today joined 252 members of the U.S. House of Representatives in passing H.R. 3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex.

"January 6, 2021 was one of the darkest days for American democracy. The nation deserves answers and accountability -- that's why I voted to establish an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly January 6th terrorist attack on our Capitol," said Pingree. "Much like the outside panel created after the 9/11 attacks, the January 6th commission will give the American people an objective understanding of how such a horrific attack could occur and prevent future threats. As that terrible day in January demonstrated, our democracy is fragile and we must stand up to threats of domestic terrorism."

H.R. 3233 establishes an independent and bipartisan 10-member commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, build a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to and on that day, and ensure this never happens again. Modeled after the 9/11 Commission, a January 6th Commission will be focused solely on the causes and events of January 6th; be equipped with subpoena power to assist its investigatory work; and be evenly bipartisan to ensure that all Americans have faith in the investigation and its resulting outputs.

Tomorrow, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on a $1.9 billion supplemental budget to secure the Capitol Complex in the wake of the January 6th attack. The emergency security supplemental contains funding in the jurisdiction of six Appropriations Subcommittees, including the House Appropriations Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, which Congresswoman Pingree chairs.
