Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on the work ahead for the Department of Defense commission tasked with redesignating military bases and property honoring leaders of the Confederacy:

"I look forward to this commission's recommendations, as it begins its work in earnest to reckon with our nation's history and honor Americans who embody our values and reflect our nation's diversity. Their mission is essential to the character and culture of our armed forces. Men who fought to preserve the institution of slavery and betrayed our country to defend white supremacy do not deserve to be honored by our military. Congress and the Department of Defense must give this commission the resources it needs to be successful.

"I continue to urge military leaders to move quickly to complete this work to remove the names of traitors from Department of Defense property. Young men and women should not have to live, work and train on installations bearing the names of men who would deny their rights as Americans."

Congressman Brown and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) championed the provision in the FY21 National Defense Authorization Act to redesignate military bases and Department of Defense property honoring leaders of the Confederacy. A bipartisan supermajority overrode President Trump's veto of the measure.
