Harris Reacts to Education Secretary's Support for Transgender Boys in Girls Sports

Statement

Congressman Andy Harris, M.D., during an Appropriations Committee hearing today, asked Secretary Miguel Cardona about his views on transgender biological boys competing is girls sports, especially in light of national news stories on the topic coming out of Connecticut where Secretary Cardona previously served as the state's Education Commissioner. Additionally, Caitlyn Jenner, famed transgender Olympic gold medalist, has publicly criticized transgender biological men competing in women's sports, citing a lack of fairness.

Congressman Harris issued the following statement:

"My daughter was an athlete in college. She and countless other women and girls are offered the opportunity to compete on a level playing field in school-based athletics. Unfortunately, Secretary Cardona made clear that he and this Administration are supportive of a nationwide change in policy which would not only allow biological males to compete in female sports, but would likely penalize those institutions that disagree with this policy. The science is clear -- biological males, even if they take drugs to decrease their testosterone, have a distinct muscular and cardiovascular advantage over biological females. This change in policy would decimate the current level playing field in female sports, and violate the long- and hard-fought-for rights of women. The Biden Administration's support of this change in policy is contrary to well-established science, and is a slap in the face to Title IX and to all the young biological women around the country who deserve equal opportunities in athletics."
