Quigley Statement On Ruling Calling Barr's Characterizations Of Mueller Report "Misleading"

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after a federal judge criticized former Attorney General William Barr's handling of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report and accusing Barr of misleading Congress, the public, and the court:

"Today's ruling confirms what we have known for over two years: Attorney General Barr used the Department of Justice to act as President Trump's personal defense lawyer and to mislead the public and Congress about the contents of the Mueller report. Barr's actions not only caused widespread confusion about the report in the early days after its completion, but also destroyed the Department of Justice's credibility, eroded their independence, and undermined the rule of law.

"It will take years to repair the damage that Barr and Trump did to the Department of Justice and to the public's trust in the justice system.

"It is also clearer than ever that Barr never had any intention of presenting the Special Counsel's report honestly or of charging Trump with obstruction of justice. In fact, he went out of his way to deceive the public about the Special Counsel's findings and the Trump campaign's links to Russia.

"I am glad that Judge Jackson has now ordered the release of Barr's memo, which claimed that former President Trump could not be charged for obstruction of justice for his actions surrounding the Mueller Investigation. The American people deserve to have a full understanding of what the Special Counsel's report said and the actions Barr took to deceive them."
