Latta: Facebook Makes Decisions Behind Closed Doors

Date: May 5, 2021

Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH5) provided the following statement after Facebook's Oversight Board announced President Trump's account ban will continue until a further decision is made:

"Today's decision highlights how Facebook makes decisions: through a private court, behind closed doors. The consequences for free speech and public discourse deserve more than a vague decision made by secret, Facebook-appointed "experts.' Facebook conducted their own "court' through an Oversight Board, which then punted the final decision right back to Facebook. Facebook needs to re-evaluate their policies that determine what they suppress on their platforms so that they are enforced consistently, fairly, and done so through a transparent process.

"Today's decision also calls into question how Facebook uses liability protections afforded by Section 230 to make consequential decisions. This is exactly why Congress needs to act to reign in Big Tech and increase not only transparency, but accountability. As the leading Republican on the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, I am working with my E&C colleagues to thoughtfully review these policies. We are committed to upholding free speech and holding Big Tech accountable for their actions."
