Luján Statement on Passing Bipartisan Resolution to Reinstate Methane Emission Standards

U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after the Senate passed a resolution of disapproval, under the Congressional Review Act (CRA), to reinstate methane emission standards that were rolled back by the Trump administration. Senator Luján co-sponsored the resolution.

"Time is running out. Greenhouse gas emissions are fueling the climate crisis and present a real and urgent threat to the health, safety, and well-being of New Mexico families. New Mexico has the worst methane emissions in the nation and these emissions pollute the air we breathe, endanger our environment, and harm our economy. Each year, New Mexico loses hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue from methane flaring, venting, and leaking. The cost of inaction is too great.

"Today's bipartisan action to reinstate commonsense methane emission standards -- which industry leaders support -- is a step in the right direction after the previous administration gutted these standards. Cutting methane pollution and acting on climate have been longstanding priorities of mine, which is why I was proud to champion the Methane Waste Prevention Act last Congress and to co-sponsor the resolution passed today."
