Rep. Zeldin Promotes Bipartisan Liver Fluke Cancer Study Act in Testimony to House VA Committee

Press Release

Date: May 6, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Yesterday, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) testified before the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, urging passage of his bipartisan legislation, H.R. 1273 - the Vietnam Veterans Liver Fluke Cancer Study Act. The bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to conduct a study to determine the prevalence of liver fluke amongst the Vietnam veteran population.

Countless Vietnam veterans are suffering from the effects of liver fluke, presumably from their time serving overseas. However, these veterans are not receiving the care they have earned from the VA because it does not have enough research and evidence to prove that liver fluke in these veterans resulted from their service in Vietnam.
