Perry Introduces Bill Naming New Federal Courthouse After Judicial Legend Judge Sylvia Rambo

U.S. Representative Scott Perry today introduced bipartisan-supported legislation to name the new Federal Courthouse in Harrisburg, "The Sylvia H. Rambo United States Courthouse and Federal Building."

Shortly after receiving her Juris Doctorate from The Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Judge Rambo served as a public defender for Cumberland County -- rising to the position of Chief Public Defender in 1976, at which time she became the first female judge to serve on the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas for Cumberland County.

In 1979, Judge Rambo was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve on the Middle District Court of Pennsylvania - becoming the first woman to serve on this Court. She also became the first woman to serve as Chief Judge of the Court, from 1992 to 1999.

"Judge Rambo's trailblazing career is filled with historic moments -- including many that shattered glass ceilings and opened doors for women to participate fully in our Nation's judicial system," said Congressman Perry. "Her legacy of service to our fellow Pennsylvanians is unmatched, and this building is a fitting and enduring symbol of American justice for all who enter its doors."

The bill already enjoys bipartisan support, with original cosponsors including Pennsylvania Representatives Fred Keller (R), Susan Wild (D), Brian Fitzpatrick (R), Matt Cartwright (D), and Guy Reschenthaler (R).

"During her tenure as Chief Judge, Judge Rambo has been a tireless advocate for the pursuit of a new courthouse in Harrisburg -- culminating in the groundbreaking of the building in 2018," said Congressman Perry. "As her efforts on this initiative near completion, it's only fitting that the building be named in her honor."

As a reflection of Judge Rambo's historic legacy, her colleagues at the Middle District Court of Pennsylvania unanimously support Perry's bill.
