Location: Washington, DC

On Wednesday, April 21, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1573. Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) released the following statement after voting against the bill:

"Today, the Democratic House majority took yet another action that would exacerbate the illegal immigration crisis the Biden Administration has caused by passing H.R. 1573," said Murphy. "Requiring access to counsel for individuals subjected to a secondary inspection would also slow down processing at ports of entry during a time when we have record number of individuals being held at the border. We are treating these individuals better than we treat many of our citizens.

"Not to mention it would cost taxpayers $825 million, and remove even more CBP officers from doing their job of stopping drug and sex traffickers at the border. This is irresponsible policy and that's why I voted against it today on the House floor."
