Padilla Applauds Nomination of Robert Santos to Lead Census Bureau

Statement

Date: April 15, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, released the following statement on Robert Santos' nomination to lead the U.S. Census Bureau. Padilla formerly served as the chair of the California Complete Count Committee (CCCC) which worked to increase participation in the 2020 Census.

"I applaud the nomination of Robert Santos to serve as the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau. His leadership and expertise in data science will be essential to restoring confidence and integrity to an agency that President Trump repeatedly attempted to undermine for political gain. As the first Latino nominated to the position, Mr. Santos will be able to draw on his life experiences to help ensure accurate representation of the hard-to-count communities that have been ignored or intimidated by the Census process under previous administrations.

"An accurate census is critical to our democracy and to our economy. It underpins fair representation in government and allows us to ensure that our communities receive equitable funding for schools, roads, health care, and much more. What's more, businesses often rely on census data to inform their decisions and make new investments. As a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, which oversees the census, I look forward to working with Mr. Santos to ensure that the Census Bureau counts everyone."
