Inhofe Calls Biden 'Political' Decision to Withdraw from Afghanistan 'Reckless and Dangerous'

Statement

Date: April 13, 2021

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on reports that President Biden intends to withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021:

"I understand that President Biden plans to announce that all remaining U.S. troops will completely withdraw from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021. To say I'm concerned is a vast understatement--this is a reckless and dangerous decision," Inhofe said. "No one wants a forever war, but I've consistently said any withdrawal must be conditions-based. Arbitrary deadlines would likely put our troops in danger, jeopardize all the progress we've made, and lead to civil war in Afghanistan--and create a breeding ground for international terrorists. We're talking about protecting American lives here.

"I urge President Biden to reconsider his decision to withdraw all forces by the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack. This date shows this decision is political and is not conditions-based. An arbitrary withdrawal also sends the wrong message to our allies and adversaries--President Biden must change course."
