Rep. Schrier Pushes for 8th District Priorities During Infrastructure Hearing

Press Release

Date: April 14, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) participated in a Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee hearing to talk about her transportation and infrastructure policy priorities. During the hearing, Rep. Schrier spoke about infrastructure needs throughout Washington's 8th congressional district. A clip of Rep. Schrier's remarks can be found here.

"I appreciate the opportunity to testify about my transportation and infrastructure priorities to help alleviate congestion, increase clean energy use, fix our roads and bridges, and get people back to work," said Rep. Schrier. "My district has it all - farms, crowded suburbs, mountain passes, rural roads, interstates, freight, rail, wind, hydropower and more. This means that we cannot address infrastructure needs with a one-size-fits-all approach. As we move forward with our transportation and infrastructure legislation, it is my hope that we will take into consideration districts like mine that have unique needs depending on the town and region."

Representative Schrier went on to mention the need for greater federal investments in hydro, wind, and solar power which are critical for broader electrification and clean energy goals. She also mentioned how important it is for rural areas in Washington's 8th district to be connected to other areas in the state for trade, emergency services, and fire safety. Specific projects highlighted in her testimony included: funding for Wenatchee Valley's Apple Capital Loop, maintenance of I-90, and widening and improving the SR18 interchange. Rep. Schrier emphasized the importance of connectivity and road improvement for the district, with agriculture being at the heart of its economy.

Finally, the Congresswoman highlighted climate action and environmental stewardship in WA-08. In the coming weeks, Rep. Schrier plans to reintroduce the Legacy Roads and Trails bill, which ensures dedicated funding to US Forest Service projects that protect clean water and riparian habitat. This program focuses on urgently needed road decommissioning of unused or unsafe roads, removal or replacement of fish passage barriers, the repair and maintenance of roads and trails.
