Statement

Date: April 13, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

NC-11 Congressional Representative Madison Cawthorn, dropped H.R. 2389 on the House floor last week. This bill establishes a mental health framework to provide adequate mental health care to Capitol Police officers. Specifically, this bill prevents the Chief of the United States Capitol Police from retaliating or imposing "undue" disciplinary actions against officers who seek wellness services including trauma counselors. It authorizes the USCP Chief to appoint such number of trauma counselors as is necessary to maintain high morale, and instructs the USCP administration to investigate the feasibility of outside vendors providing trauma counselors.

Rep. Cawthorn issued the following statement on the legislation, "The mental health of our law enforcement officers is too often ignored by our leaders in Washington. This bill will ensure that officers in the USCP force have access to the resources they need to maintain high morale and safeguard their mental health. I am committed to introducing legislation that places the needs of working Americans first, and to giving our law enforcement officers the tools they need to fulfill their mission each day."
