Rep. Payne, Jr.'s Statement on William Walker, First Black American House Sergeant-at-Arms

Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. released the following statement regarding the appointment of Major General William J. Walker to become the new House Sergeant-at-Arms. Walker is the first African American to serve in that role, which is responsible for the security and protection of the U.S. House of Representatives.

"General Walker is the perfect choice to protect our House of Representatives and its elected officials. He is a decorated, 39-year military veteran and serves as Commanding General of the D.C. National Guard. Before that, he was long-time official with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, serving as a Special Agent and Deputy Administrator, and a veteran of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. His appointment will support the safety of every American who works in the House or visits it for the foreseeable future.

I want to thank Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for her selection of Major General Walker to the post and praise her continued dedication to diversity and inclusion throughout the government."
