Daines Introduces Bill to Delist Grizzly Bears, Put Management Back in the Hands of Montanans

U.S. Senator Steve Daines introduced the "Grizzly Bear State Management Act of 2021," which would remove grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem from the Endangered Species List, prevent further obstruction in the courts, and return management of the species back to the hands of Montanans.

"The science is clear: the grizzly bear population has more than recovered in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Area. Wildlife management must be determined by science, not by activist judges. Montana-led management is what's best for our communities, public safety, ecosystems, wildlife, and the grizzly bear itself. It is time to delist the grizzly bear and return management to Montana," Daines said.

Background:

Daines brought U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Aurelia Skipwith to Montana last October to meet directly with farmers and ranchers to discuss the importance of grizzly bear management.

Last September, Daines testified in a U.S. Senate Committee in support of his bill, the "Grizzly Bear State Management Act", which would delist the grizzly bear in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, return management to the State of Montana and prevent further obstruction in the courts.

On March 6th, 2020, Daines announced the U.S. Department of the Interior would take action to reduce grizzly bear conflicts after his calls for better management surrounding Montana communities.
