Cooper Statement in Support of President Biden's Actions to Combat Gun Violence

Location: Nashville, TN

Today Rep. Jim Cooper (TN-05) commended President Joe Biden's executive actions to end gun violence by saying: "President Biden's actions today will undoubtedly save lives, especially here in Middle Tennessee where our governor just signed a bill to allow the carrying of firearms without a permit," Rep. Cooper said. "The House passed expanded background check bills last month that we still need the Senate to bring up for a vote."

President Biden's executive actions will invest in evidence-based community violence intervention, provide model red flag laws for states, and begin new initiatives to track gun trafficking and "ghost guns" that lack a serial number. Last month Cooper joined the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force in a letter asking President Biden to use his authority under The National Firearms Act to regulate the sales of concealable assault-style weapons.

Cooper also joined Democratic Members of Congress in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer last week asking him bring the expanded background check bills for gun sales up for a vote in the Senate. The bills, H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, and H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021, overwhelmingly passed the House last month. They will eliminate loopholes and expand background checks on all gun purchases.
