Gov. Sanford Commends House Progress on Property Taxes

GOVERNOR HAILS ACTION AS STEP FORWARD, ASKS SENATE TO CONTINUE WORK ON BILL

Gov. Mark Sanford issued the following statement today on the House's passage of a constitutional amendment and bill aimed at providing property tax relief to homeowners in South Carolina:

"I said in my State of the State address that 2006 could be the year for property tax relief in South Carolina, and the House's action today moved one step closer to making this a reality," Gov. Sanford said. "I'd applaud the House for its job in passing a bill that doesn't raise taxes, and specifically for Speaker Harrell's willingness to address some of the sales tax exemptions through the separate bill he's introduced. There are a number of ways to get to the end result of property tax relief, and I'd ask the Senate to continue moving forward on this issue and for both bodies to work to find common ground between the two proposals."
