Congresswoman Johnson Statement on the Events of January 6th and Articles of Impeachment

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Chair of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and Dean of the Texas Congressional Delegation, released the following statement regarding the events of January 6th and Articles of Impeachment:

"My thoughts today are first and foremost with the family of Officer Brian Sicknick, who tragically lost his life in defense of the Capitol during Wednesday's insurrection. Without the sacrifice of Officer Sicknick and the men and women of Capitol Police and other first responders, our Capitol, a symbol of our democracy, would certainly have fallen," said Congresswoman Johnson.

"As Members of Congress convened in a special session to count, confirm, and certify the results of the 2020 presidential election, we were met with two separate but equal acts of sedition. Inside of the Capitol, some who claim to be conservatives, who preach originalism and cling to the preservation of principles spelled out in the Constitution, desecrated all that they stand for when they objected to the votes of millions of Americans being counted. Outside of the Capitol, thousands of insurrectionists gathered, inspired and enabled by the events inside and the words of the President of the United States, determined to overturn proceedings by any means necessary.

"Despite this disgraceful gambit, Congress, in its majority, and as it has for every session since its establishment, stood on the side of our democracy. However, we cannot in good conscience move forward as a nation without addressing the events of January 6th and assigning responsibility. That is why I am today announcing my intention to support Articles of Impeachment once they are brought to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. In addition, I am calling for the identification and immediate prosecution of those who illegally stormed the Capitol building and terrorized the Members, support staff, press, and law enforcement inside."
