Kinzinger Introduces Bill to Support Nuclear Technologies

Press Release

Date: March 4, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

This week, Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) reintroduced legislation to streamline and increase the efficiency of nuclear technology permitting and licensing decisions. H.R. 1578, the Nuclear Licensing Efficiency Act, builds upon the recent efforts by Congress to modernize nuclear fees and licensing procedures.

Specifically, this bill continues the modernization effort at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by establishing updated procedures and timelines for environmental and safety evaluations necessary to make timely permitting and licensing decisions. The bill also expands fee reforms to cover nuclear fuel facilities, ensures a more cost-effective regulation of the nuclear supply chain, and improves the efficiency of advice to the NRC by the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards.
Following his reintroduction of H.R. 1578, Congressman Kinzinger released the following statement:

"At a time when we so desperately need to work together and meet in the middle to solve our problems, energy policymaking is no exception. The recent weather storms have been a great reminder of how important it is to have a diverse energy supply, as well as a reliable source of baseload power. We need to have a safety net when other sources struggle -- and time and time again, a substantial portion of that safety net has been nuclear power. We need an all-of-the-above strategy, one that I have advocated for a long time, and one that has worked in our state of Illinois. I'm proud to reintroduce this legislation, and I will continue to advocate for and support this vital resource."
In 2019, Congressman Kinzinger had his legislation H.R 1320, the Nuclear Utilization of Keynote Energy (NUKE) Act, signed into law as part of S. 512, the Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act -- a bipartisan and bicameral agreement to spur America's innovation and leadership in nuclear technologies. The Nuclear Licensing Efficiency Act aims to reinforce these efforts and help ensure a safe and strong future for American nuclear power.
