Rep. Peters Helps House Pass Historic Government Reform Bill

Today, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) helped pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a bill he cosponsored to protect and expand voting rights, improve campaign finance rules, and hold public officials accountable to the American public.

"Last year's election demonstrated that voter suppression persists, and after the last four years, Americans deserve a transparent government that works in their interest," said Rep. Peters. "The For the People Act delivers on our promise to fix broken federal institutions, offering reforms that bolster voters' rights, ensure accurate elections, close campaign finance loopholes, and crackdown on corruption."

Key provisions of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, would:

Expand automatic voter registration and same-day registration.
Strengthen vote by mail, early voting, and ballot access.
Combat voter intimidation and voter suppression.
Enhance federal support for election security from foreign and domestic interference.
Empower small donors with matching funds paid for by lawbreakers, not taxpayers.
Establishes a "Freedom from Influence Fund" that would provide matching funds to qualified federal candidates who chose to participate in the matching donation system. The new fund's money would come from a fee assessed on civil and criminal financial penalties against corporate lawbreakers and tax cheats. No taxpayer dollars are spent on the matching system.
Fix partisan gerrymandering by requiring states to adopt independent redistricting commissions.
Promote digital ad transparency.
Compel mandatory disclosure of "dark money" -- spending meant to influence political outcomes where the source of the money is unregulated.
Expand disclosure requirements and prevent Members of Congress from serving on corporate boards.
Enforce ethics and conflict of interest rules for all government officials.

Rep. Peters continued: "The health of our democracy is reflected by every American's right to cast a vote. The debunked theories about voter fraud surrounding this bill illustrate how rampant misinformation campaigns hurt the fabric of our nation. This reform effort will end decades of dysfunction in Washington, return power to the American people, and usher us towards a more equitable and prosperous future. I urge the Senate to work quickly to move this bill one step closer to enactment."
