Issa Votes to Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act

Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-50) made the following statement regarding the House passage of H.R. 1620, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2021. Issa stated:

"This legislation is of critical importance particularly to women who are victims of crimes including domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Reauthorization is overdue and I urge the Senate to prioritize consideration.

"While I believe a clean reauthorization of the 2013 VAWA Act would have been preferable, my hope is that with additional work the final bill will amplify the original intent and focus on protections of and services for women victims.

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) supports comprehensive responses to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. Further, it invests in prevention through the Rape Prevention and Education Program and VAWA Department of Justice prevention programs. This has dramatically improved federal, tribal, state, and local responses to these crimes.

Congressman Issa championed the 2013 VAWA reauthorization efforts and was successful in including language to focus on Native American women.
