Hagedorn Opposes Democrat Start to Dismantle the Second Amendment

Press Release

Date: March 11, 2021
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Congressman Jim Hagedorn (MN-01) today voted against H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446, attempts by Democrats to infringe upon Americans' Second Amendment rights, punish law-abiding gun owners, take steps toward a national gun registry and implement restrictive measures that will make obtaining a firearm for the purposes of self-defense more difficult. Both bills passed the House by narrow margins.

Rep. Hagedorn issued the following statement at the conclusion of the votes:

"It is ironic that just a week after Democrats voted to defund the police, they are starting to dismantle the Second Amendment and undercut the rights of law-abiding Americans to keep and bear arms.

"The two bills Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats brought forward today aim to violate our constitutional rights and make Americans less safe. For starters, these proposals impose redundant background checks that already occur on all gun sales and would undermine the existing National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Their bills would affect only good citizens, not the criminals who misuse firearms.

"Democrats also intend to impose a federal takeover of the transfer process that could empower anti-gun bureaucrats and politicians to impose indefinite delays upon firearms owners and even make criminals out of ordinary Americans who seek to help friends or neighbors protect themselves from immediate danger. This invasive federal intervention would set in motion the left's ultimate goal of a national gun registry and the confiscation of classes of firearms.

"My constituents can count on me to defend the Second Amendment and support legislation that protects their rights and abilities to own, possess and use firearms for self-protection and other lawful purposes."
