Walbery Opposes Pelosi's Federal Takeover of Elections

Press Release

Date: March 3, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) voted against H.R. 1, Speaker Pelosi's overreaching election bill that expands the federal government's role in the election process. This partisan legislation will impose costly mandates for publicly funded campaigns, make it harder to ensure voter integrity, and undermine free speech and the First Amendment.

"It is shameful that H.R. 1--Speaker Pelosi's leading legislative priority--does nothing to help workers and small businesses who are struggling. Instead, Democrats are using H.R. 1 as a political power grab designed to tilt elections in their favor for years to come," said Walberg. "There are numerous problematic provisions in this partisan legislation that will weaken election security, restrict free speech, and direct taxpayer dollars to finance political campaigns. What's more, the bill interferes with a state's ability to maintain accurate voter rolls, verify voter identity, and remove ineligible or duplicative records. At a time we need to restore faith in the election process, a Washington-centered takeover will only make it more costly and chaotic."
