Hartzler Statement Opposing Legislation to Enrich Politicians

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-04) released the following statement regarding H.R. 1, the Politician's Protection Act, which entrenches elected officials and uses federal dollars to fund politicians' campaigns.

"Protecting the integrity of our elections should be of utmost importance to Congress, but legislation such as the ill-advised H.R. 1 attempts to politicize our institutions, federalize our elections, and fund politicians' campaigns," Hartzler said. "For the countless time, the House is voting on a blatantly misnamed bill with a misguided agenda. Instead, we should work to provide meaningful reforms to improve and secure our elections, not create more opportunities for fraud and abuse.

We must defeat this draconian bill. It not only decimates election integrity, but pads politicians' campaign coffers at the same time. If H.R. 1 becomes law, a politician may end ads by saying they "approve this message', but our government funds will be footing the bill."

Specifically, H.R. 1 would:

Send government money to fund political campaigns. Not to build roads or bridges, but to add 600% of government funds to every small dollar donated by Americans.
Gives government funds to Americans to donate to campaigns.
Legalize voting for convicted felons all over the country, even if they were convicted of election fraud.
Weaken the security of our elections and make it harder to protect against voter fraud by requiring states to perform automatic voter registration and same-day voter registration with no safeguards.
Trample free speech by requiring the publishing of names and home addresses of certain donors to organizations who advocate for a candidate.
Weaponize the Federal Election Commission (FEC), by making it a 5-member partisan body, to entrench whoever is in power.
Eliminate the need for a voter to provide photo identification with only a sworn statement verifying his/her identity. This move would leave our system wide open to increased voter fraud.
