Speaker Hastert Comments on the Passing of Coretta Scott King
Resolution Honoring Mrs. King to be brought to the Floor Today

January 31, 2006

(Washington, D.C.) Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) today issued the following statement regarding the passing of Coretta Scott King:

"I am saddened by the death of Coretta Scott King. She and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., were the epitome of American strength and perseverance during a difficult struggle for civil rights. Standing by his side, she helped bring America to an understanding that, "All men are created equal." Her death comes as our nation begins its month long celebration of the accomplishments of African Americans. It is only fitting that we honor her and the entire King family for their contributions to our nation.

"I will be bringing a resolution of condolence before the House later today to enable all Members to formally express their appreciation for the life of this courageous lady."
