McHenry Introduces Legislation to Reauthorize the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area

Today, Congressman Patrick McHenry (NC-10) introduced H.R. 1759, legislation to reauthorize the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. This bill extends the authorization period of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area through September 30, 2036.

"The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area was created to protect and preserve the Appalachian culture that is cherished around the world," said Congressman McHenry. "Here in North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Mountains are valued not only for their rich history and unique traditions, but also for supporting thousands of jobs that play a vital role in our state's economy. I am proud to introduce this bill to preserve the Blue Ridge Mountains and Appalachian traditions for generations to come."

Background: The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area was designated by Congress and President George W. Bush in November 2003 in recognition of the unique character, culture, and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and foothills in Western North Carolina. Heritage tourism in the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area contributes $2.39 billion annually to the economy of the region, supporting more than 30,000 jobs and generating $176.5 million annually in state and local tax revenue.
