Bonamici Helps Pass Gun Violence Prevention Bills

WASHINGTON, DC [03/11/21] --Today two of Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici's gun violence prevention priorities passed the House. The Bipartisan Background Checks Act (H.R. 8) and the Enhanced Background Checks Act (H.R. 1446) are commonsense safety measures with broad support that will require universal background checks and close the Charleston loophole.

"Today the House is taking decisive action that can save lives," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "It's past time that we do more than offer thoughts and prayers. An entire generation of students has been traumatized by active shooter events and drills in school, a place they should be safe. Families across NW Oregon mourn loved ones lost to gun violence tragedies. I've heard from many Oregonians about the urgent need for gun violence prevention measures that would prevent further loss of life. I call on the Senate to heed their call and send this bill to President Biden's desk."

"These bills are a critical step toward saving lives from our nation's gun violence epidemic, which kills more than 500 people a year right here in Oregon and wounds hundreds more," said Jennifer Langston, a survivor of gun violence and volunteer leader with the Oregon chapter of Moms Demand Action. "Recent shootings in Scappoose, Beaverton, and Portland show that this crisis is getting worse during COVID-19, and the time to address it is now. We look forward to standing behind Rep. Bonamici and her colleagues as they do just that by passing these historic bills into law."

Bonamici has long been a champion for gun violence prevention measures, including joining the sit-in on the House floor in 2016. She is a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce in Congress.
