Date: Jan. 18, 2021
Location: Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

"Today, we reflect on the life & legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Let us remember his lifelong work to overcome prejudice and hatred, and always strive to honor everything that he stood for.

"As our nation continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic and navigate heavy partisan divisions, it's imperative to reflect on Dr. King's legacy of unifying communities that are made of diverse citizens and ideas, where all Americans are created equal and entitled to unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as our founding fathers intended. We are reminded today of the responsibility to provide equal opportunities for all, fight discrimination, reject prejudice, and foster progress together. We must rededicate ourselves to progress just as Dr. King did so long ago. "

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Dean & Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
