ARIZONA MOURNS THE LOSS OF SAMUEL P. GODDARD, JR.

Flags ordered at half-staff in honor of former Arizona Governor

Governor Janet Napolitano has ordered flags at Arizona state buildings to be flown at
half-staff today, in memory of former Arizona Governor Samuel Pearson Goddard Jr. Governor
Goddard died this morning; he was 86 years old. Sam is the father of Arizona Attorney General
Terry Goddard.

"I am deeply saddened by Sam's passing," said Governor Napolitano. "I first met Sam when I
moved to Arizona. He was a kind and thoughtful man who contributed greatly to this state he
loved very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Goddard family."

The elder Goddard was a central figure in Arizona politics for nearly 50 years. He served as
Governor from 1965 to 1967.

A graduate of Harvard University, Goddard was an Army Air Corps officer during World War II,
serving in England, India, North Africa and the South Pacific. Following the war, Goddard
received his law degree from the University of Arizona and practiced law in Tucson.
State flags will remain at half-staff through the day of the funeral for Governor Goddard. Funeral
arrangements are pending.
