Out-of-State Resignations Cannot Distract us from Unconscionable In-State GOP Failures

U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) releases the following statement regarding the resignation of ERCOT board members and Gov. Abbott's response:

"This does not solve the problem of Governor Abbott's failure to prepare. For a decade, recommendations for the state to require adequate weatherization for power generators have been ignored, first by Governor Perry and, more recently, by Governor Abbott and his appointees. "Be prepared' is definitely not their motto. The Governor's belated reaction failed Texans--bringing so many of us into the dark, into the cold, and then leaving us in the dark about the path forward. The power outages associated with the hard Texas freeze of 2011 provided dramatic notice of the need to better protect our energy infrastructure. Disregarding a report about how to prevent more blackouts, our Republican leaders were more interested in helping their fossil fuel friends avoid a safety expenditure than assuring safety. Their failure to invest in weatherized infrastructure is like failing to buy insurance: It may initially save generators a few dollars, but when disaster strikes, we all pay much more in human suffering."
