Hoeven Statement on Impeachment Trial of Former President Trump

Statement

Date: Jan. 26, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Senator John Hoeven issued the following statement today on the impeachment trial of former President Trump:

"As I've said, it would be better for us to focus on bringing our nation together rather than going through the impeachment process. Also, I do not believe it is constitutional to impeach a president who is no longer in office and in fact the chief justice won't be presiding. That is why, I supported Senator Rand Paul's motion that putting a former president on trial is unconstitutional. President Trump should not have encouraged the protest on January 6, but ultimately, those rioters who broke the law are responsible for their actions and should be prosecuted. However, the Senate will again convene and go through another impeachment trial starting February 9."
