Larson Votes for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

"After the murder of George Floyd last May, the nation rose up demanding needed change. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident and far too many Black Americans become victims of police brutality and systemic injustice.

"In response to this horrific tragedy, the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a bold and historic policing reform, spearheaded by the Congressional Black Caucus, that Mitch McConnell blocked it in the Senate.

"Today, the House proudly voted again to pass this much-needed policing reform. Our nation has already waited too long to address and end the systemic racism that exists in America. While not a panacea, the Justice in Policing Act is a significant step forward to ending the systemic racism that is rooted in our justice system. Too many lives have wrongly been taken too soon. Often times there is distrust between the law enforcement and the people they serve. It's time to enact the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and finally put a stop to needless loss of life in our communities!"

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act:

Bans all chokeholds;
Bans no-knock warrants in drug cases;
Ends racial, religious and discriminatory profiling;
Eliminates the qualified immunity doctrine that is a barrier to holding police officers accountable for wrongful conduct;
Establishes a National Police Misconduct Registry to improve transparency and prevent problematic officers who are fired or leave one agency, from moving to another jurisdiction without any accountability;
Requires data collection, including mandatory body cameras and dashboard cameras;
Establishes new standards for policing and the Public Safety Innovation grants for community-based organizations to help reimagine policing in their communities;
Makes lynching a federal hate crime; and more.
