Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement after voting to pass H.R.5, the Equality Act, landmark legislation that ensures LGBTQ Americans are guaranteed the full protections of federal civil rights law: a

"The fight for equal rights for LGBTQ Americans has gone on long enough," said Costa. "All Americans deserve equal treatment in the eyes of the law, period! Most states still leave LGBTQ people at risk of being fired, evicted, or denied services and this bill will put an end to that patchwork of discrimination. I am proud to vote for the Equality Act. It's the right thing to do."

The Equality Act prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in areas such as employment, education, housing, credit, the jury system, public accommodations and facilities, and federal funding. 29 states across America still lack comprehensive statewide laws against LGBTQ discrimination, leaving large gaps in LGBTQ protections.
