Audio: Bustos Announces Appropriations Subcommittee Roles

Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17), a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, announced today that she has been appointed to multiple subcommittees critical to the priorities of Northwest and Central Illinois.

Congresswoman Bustos was appointed to the Defense, Labor-Health and Human Services-Education and Energy and Water Subcommittees, which are responsible for funding vital federal defense, health, energy, water and education programs.

"By serving on the Appropriations Subcommittees for Defense, Labor, Health, Human Services and Education and Energy and Water, I am well positioned to help central, western and northern Illinois secure the resources we need to navigate the pandemic, invest in critical defense sites such as the Rock Island Arsenal and Peoria Air National Guard Base, update our locks and dams, invest in educational opportunities and expand access to health care for all our communities," said Congresswoman Bustos. "I am excited for this opportunity to continue to advocate for the federal funding our region needs."

Background

The Defense Appropriations Subcommittee is responsible for funding Department of Defense and intelligence community programs, including activities related to military personnel, operations and maintenance, procurement, research and development and the Military Health System. The Subcommittee does not oversee funding for military construction or the Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works.

The Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee funds programs within the Department of Labor, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education, as well as related agencies providing social services like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Labor Relations Board, the Railroad Retirement Board and the Social Security Administration.

The Energy and Water Subcommittee funds all Department of Energy programs and nuclear agencies. The Subcommittee also funds all Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works activities, including the construction, operations and maintenance of locks and dams.
