Reed: Colleagues in Congress Must Join Us in Requesting Biden Doj Investigate Gov. Cuomo & New York State's Nursing Home Debacle

Press Release

Date: Feb. 11, 2021

Today, Rep. Tom Reed released the following statement in light of reporting demonstrating members of Governor Cuomo's staff deliberately hid critical information on the deaths of thousands of the state's parents and grandparents from lawmakers out of fear of an investigation.

Additional reporting has shown the state undercounted fatalities by 63%, as well as the number of patients it sent back to nursing homes from the hospital.

"To all my colleagues in Congress, including Democratic members of the New York Delegation -- the mountain of evidence cannot be ignored any longer.

Governor Cuomo's disastrous March order knowingly sent COVID-positive patients into nursing homes, which led to the deaths of thousands of the state's parents and grandparents.

Since that fateful order, the state has done everything in its power to downplay its horrific errors and prevent the public, lawmakers, and federal investigators from knowing the truth.

Now, the state's convenient narrative is falling apart.

Please join us and echo our ongoing call for an independent and thorough investigation by the Biden Department of Justice into Governor Cuomo and New York State. Regardless of our party affiliation, we should be able to agree this is the only way to achieve justice for the thousands of grieving New York families. It is time to move past the lies and finally uncover the full truth."

Earlier today during the Ways & means Committee markups, Reed offered an amendment to promote fundamental accountability by requiring Governors who receive federal support to attest that the data their states are reporting to the public and sharing with federal agencies is as accurate as possible.

Last week, Reed joined with members of the New York Delegation to request the Department of Justice immediately issue subpoenas for Governor Cuomo, the Secretary to the Governor, the New York State Commissioner of Health, and their staff on all documentation and communications related to their nursing home policies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
