Rep. Bera Votes to Pass Historic Equality Act to Protect LGBTQ Americans

Today, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) voted to pass H.R. 5, the Equality Act, which would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In 25 states, LGBTQ people lack nondiscrimination protections in public accommodations. The Equality Act, which passed the House of Representatives today with bipartisan support, amends existing federal civil rights laws to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in education, employment, housing, credit, jury service, public accommodations, and the use of federal funds.

"Despite significant progress over the last decade, LGBTQ Americans across the country continue to face discrimination on a daily basis. The unfortunate reality is that many in the LGBTQ community can still be legally fired from their job, evicted from their apartment, or denied service at a restaurant for simply being who they are. This is wrong, plain and simple. Every American should be treated with dignity, respect, and equally under the law - no matter who they are or who they love," said Representative Bera. "I am proud to help pass the Equality Act to ensure members of the LGBTQ community have the same civil rights and opportunities as every other American. I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to swiftly pass this landmark legislation."
