Issues: Elections

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a 30-year Army veteran, released the following statement regarding today's Congressional vote to affirm President-elect Biden's electoral college victory:

"As a servicemember, I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That same oath stays with me in the halls of Congress. I am dismayed that many of my colleagues are pushing conspiracies and actively working to undermine the democratic process in order to curry favor with outgoing President Trump. These antics are harming our republic, and undermining the founding principles generations of men and women have fought and died for.

"It does not go unnoticed that President Trump's enablers are explicitly seeking to discard the votes of predominantly Black and brown communities. Every American has the right to vote, yet some of my colleagues are content to ignore votes that disagree with their ideas in a disgraceful attempt to steal a presidential election. They will fail.

"As leaders and representatives of our great country, we must uphold American values and our common creed as one nation. The peaceful transition of power is the cornerstone of our democracy. President Trump and far too many Congressional Republicans are tarnishing this tradition. It's time to put partisanship and political stunts aside, unify as a nation and get to work delivering change and improving the lives of the American people."
