Statement

Date: Jan. 21, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) released the following statement announcing she will vote in support of the waiver for General Lloyd J. Austin, III to serve as United States Secretary of Defense.

"Today, I will vote to support the waiver necessary for General Lloyd J. Austin, III to serve as United States Secretary of Defense. I do not vote for this waiver lightly; civilian leadership of the military is a principle that I strongly support, and exceptions to this important precedent should be made only in the most unique of circumstances. I have spoken to General Austin and have been assured that he will approach his role as a civilian and will integrate civilian input into all levels of decision making. It is with this assurance, in the context of our country's grave, extraordinary challenges, that I support the waiver that will clear a path for his service as Secretary of Defense."
