Langevin Votes for Landmark Legislation to Prohibit Discrimination Against LGBTQ Americans

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) released the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 5, the Equality Act, legislation that extends federal civil rights protections to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The landmark bill, which also passed the House in 2019, is sponsored by Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI). The measure passed the House by a vote of 224-206.

"Every person deserves to live life with dignity and respect and without fear of discrimination. Extending civil rights protections to the LGBTQ community by passing the Equality Act into law is essential in our quest to create a more just and inclusive society. The Equality Act will allow Americans to work, live, and thrive no matter who they are or whom they love.

"I commend my colleague, Rhode Island's own Congressman David Cicilline, for once again leading this historic legislation to ensure LGBTQ Americans are afforded the same rights and freedoms as everyone else. From employment to housing and education, the Equality Act will once and for all guarantee nondiscrimination protections that are long overdue.

"As a member of the disability community, I understand the ugliness of discrimination and the harm it causes. Our nation is better than the bigoted impulses of a few, and with this measure we will live up to our inclusive ideals and values. House Democrats understand that in order to move forward, we must do so together, and this comprehensive non-discrimination measure is vital to doing so.

"The fight for equality must continue. I'm proud to support this landmark bill and call on my Republican colleagues to join us in our effort to pass the Equality Act into law."
