Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on 500,000 American Deaths Due to COVID-19

Statement

Date: Feb. 22, 2021

Today is a solemn day, as 500,000 Americans have died due to the coronavirus. Each person--a sibling, parent, grandparent or beloved family member--had their life cut tragically short by this virus. I send my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones during this pandemic, including the families of more than 1,600 people in my district.

A safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine keeps us hopeful. Every day, more Michiganders are receiving their vaccines. Still, it will take time to fully vaccinate every Michigander. As we distribute vaccines, we must continue to take this pandemic seriously. Everyone, including those already vaccinated, can play an important role by wearing a mask, regularly washing your hands and practicing social distancing to help stop the spread of this virus.

I am working with the Biden Administration to speed up vaccinations. Since President Biden was sworn in, I am pleased that the federal government has increased vaccine distribution to states. In Congress, I'm focused on passing another economic relief bill for families, seniors and small businesses. More relief is on the way, including additional stimulus checks, resources to speed up vaccine distribution and aid to re-open schools safely.
