Issues: Women Taxes Abortion

Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-4) today released the following statement after H.R. 541, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, was filed in Congress, with Palazzo backing the legislation as an original cosponsor. The bill would effectively prohibit Planned Parenthood from access to federal mandatory or discretionary funds for one year following its enactment.

"Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in America. Not only are they performing elective abortions, but they're profiting from it at the same time. Not one more taxpayer dime should be provided to Planned Parenthood until they can commit to no longer providing abortions."

If signed into law, neither Planned Parenthood, its affiliates, nor associated clinics would be eligible to apply for or be reimbursed federal dollars unless the company certifies it will not perform, or support other entities that perform, abortions. The bill would also authorize $235 million in federal funding to be repurposed for community health centers not performing abortions.

The legislation has been endorsed by several pro-life groups, including the Family Research Council, Susan B. Anthony List, and the National Right to Life.
