Pelosi Statement on Texas Disaster

Statement

Date: Feb. 17, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement on the disastrous situation in Texas, in which historic freezing temperatures have left millions without power and resulted in at least twenty tragic deaths:

"All Americans are watching the situation in Texas and throughout the heartlands with great sadness. We must come to the aid of those suffering without power and water, and we grieve with the families who have lost loved ones to this disaster.

"President Biden's emergency declaration is a vital, life-saving step that sends a clear signal that the federal government will be there for all Americans in their time of need. At the same time, Congress is working around the clock to pass the Biden American Rescue Plan, which secures $50 billion for the FEMA Disaster Relief Fund.

"Extreme weather poses risks to the grid that require smart and urgent investments to reduce blackouts and brownouts. Together, we must build back better an electric grid that's cheaper, cleaner and more reliable."
