Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement in response to President Joe Biden's energy policy plan for the United States, including a misguided moratorium on new oil, gas and coal leasing and permitting on federal lands.

"Within the first week of Joe Biden's presidency, he has dealt harmful blows to our oil, gas and coal industries," said Cole. "In one of his first executive orders after he took the oath of office, he hastily canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, which immediately disrupted local economies and destroyed American jobs. Continuing down the same destructive path for the future of U.S. energy development, President Biden this week laid out plans that will stop oil, gas and coal leasing on federal lands.

"These decisions are extremely problematic. Stopping production of oil and natural gas on federal lands will cost thousands of American jobs and deny state and local governments and the U.S. Treasury revenue they greatly depend on. It will also raise the prices of gasoline and utilities for Americans, leaving their wallets much thinner during these already challenging times.

"Clearly, President Biden is making political decisions to accommodate the most radical wing of his party. However, the real outcome will mean greater American reliance on foreign countries that do not have our nation's best interests at heart. I am incredibly disappointed at the direction President Biden and Democrats want to take our country in with these plans."
