Young Reintroduces the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act

Press Release

Date: Jan. 29, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) joined Senator Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) and 44 other Senators to reintroduce the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

"The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act bans the horrific act of infanticide by ensuring that babies who survive attempted abortions have the chance at life that they deserve," said Senator Young. "I find it deeply disturbing that Democrats have blocked this life-saving bill previously. This critical legislation must become law."

The bill would protect newborns that survive abortions by requiring appropriate care and admission to a hospital. The legislation requires that, when an abortion results in the live birth of an infant, health care practitioners must exercise the same degree of professional skill and care to protect the newborn as would be offered to any other child born alive at the same gestational age. It also requires that the living child, after appropriate care has been given, be immediately transported and admitted to a hospital. Current federal law does not adequately protect a born child who survives an abortion.

In addition to Senators Young and Sasse, the legislation is cosponsored by Senators Barrasso (R-WY), Blackburn (R-TN), Blunt (R-MO), Boozman (R-AR), Braun (R-IN), Burr (R-NC), Cassidy (R-LA), Cornyn (R-TX), Cotton (R-AR), Cramer (R-ND), Crapo (R-ID), Cruz (R-TX), Daines (R-MT), Ernst (R-IA), Fischer (R-NE), Graham (R-SC), Grassley (R-IA), Hagerty (R-TN), Hawley (R-MO), Hoeven (R-ND), Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Inhofe (R-OK), Johnson (R-WI), Kennedy (R-LA), Lankford (R-OK), Lee (R-UT), Lummis (R-WY), Marshall (R-KS), McConnell (R-KY), Moran (R-KS), Paul (R-KY), Portman (R-OH), Risch (R-ID), Rounds (R-SD), Romney (R-UT), Rubio (R-FL), Scott (R-FL), Scott (R-SC), Shelby (R-AL), Sullivan (R-AK), Thune (R-SD), Tillis (R-NC), Toomey (R-PA), and Wicker (R-MS).
