Hefley: President outlined bold roadmap for the future

1/31/2006

(Washington, D.C.) — U.S. Rep. Joel Hefley, R-Colo., said the President's State of the Union address Tuesday night outlined a bold roadmap for the future, but that it may be a difficult road to drive.

"In his speech to the nation the President hit on the points that needed to be addressed.

"He did a good job discussing how to maintain national and economic security and how to keep America competitive in today's world. However, the President called for several new initiatives that conjure up dollar signs in my mind and that I think Congress may be reluctant to commit to at this time.

"I was pleased with the President's insistence that the tax cuts be made permanent. This is a step that desperately needs to be taken to help ensure our economic future.

"I also believe the need to find alternative forms of energy is a good, positive idea. This will likely require an enormous investment of funds, but the President realizes that oil can not be America's only future. We must look at alternatives.

"He spoke on the progress we have made, and continue to make, in Iraq and Afghanistan and was right in saying we must stay the course and not retreat from our duties.

"He also called on Congress to pass medical liability and immigration reforms, both of which are extremely important. Though he didn't hit immigration hard or in detail it is obvious it is something he realizes we can no longer ignore.

"While the road ahead may have its difficulties, I think the President gave the nation good directions for a more secure future."
