Foster Statement on Inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris

Statement

Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn into office:

"I was honored to attend the historic inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. This inauguration represents the end of a dark and shameful period in American history spurred by a demagogic President. While our democratic system bent these past four years, today's peaceful transfer of power shows the world that it did not break. Our democracy is resilient, and it endures.

"The Biden administration inherits a daunting set of problems, including effectively deploying the COVID-19 vaccine, mitigating the economic consequences of the pandemic for hardworking families and small businesses, addressing climate change, passing comprehensive immigration reform, strengthening the Affordable Care Act, and pursuing common sense gun control.

"President Biden and Vice President Harris understand that science, and specifically American scientific leadership, holds the key to solving the major challenges we face. As the only PhD physicist in Congress, I look forward to working with them to bolster our nation's scientific infrastructure every step of the way.

"We have a lot of work to do, and I am committed to working with my colleagues in Congress to tackle the issues the American people sent us here to confront."
