Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) today voted for House Resolution 21, calling on Vice President Mike Pence to immediately invoke the 25th Amendment. Doing so would remove Donald Trump as President, and Vice President Pence would immediately exercise powers as acting President for the remainder of the term.

Under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, officers of the executive departments of the Cabinet may convene and mobilize to declare the President incapable of executing the duties of his office, and the Vice President takes over the role. Ryan signed on as co-sponsor of the resolution in the wake of the January 6th armed insurrection of the Capitol -- which was encouraged and facilitated by the sitting President.

"The defining trait of our democracy for the past 200 years has been the peaceful transfer of power from one Administration to another. Instead of supporting our democratic values, this President has chosen to plant and sow unfounded conspiracies about a free and fair election. When the outcome was not to his liking, he quarterbacked an armed insurrection of the United States Capitol. This unprecedented behavior is dangerous to our democracy, and it must be repudiated in the strongest terms," said Congressman Tim Ryan. "Vice President Pence and I don't agree on much politically, but we do agree on the foundational values of democracy. He must invoke the 25th Amendment and lead this country for the remainder of the term. If Vice President Pence fails to act, the House will have no choice but to impeach this dangerous and unfit President."
